Happy new year everyone and we all have new year resolutions, promises, and goals to achieve. But wouldn’t it be great to start your new year by upgrading your Galaxy Note 3 LTE from Android 4.4 KitKat to Lollipop 5.0 (of course if you have one). Pakistani consumer market is now well into the race for 4G services especially with Warid into the game promising to provide tough competition to previously the lone survivor Zong. For people who are using Note 3 LTE version i.e. N-9005 variant, they are well aware of the fact that the said device doesn’t show GSM/WCDMA/LTE option in MOBILE NETWORKS option and you may have rooted your device like I did and probably have knocked KNOX warranty counter. There are several methods and links available for this option and best of them is to root your device and change an persist.lteon entry in your root access file to TRUE. But if you haven’t tripped the KNOX counter and want to upgrade to lollipop with the leaked but official version of Android 5.0 here is the way.
Disclaimer: If you haven’t used ODIN before or afraid that you might brick your device then please stop at this point and better wait for the official release which perhaps would appear in February 2015, but if you are enthusiastic about improved TouchViz and snappy 5.0 version of android here are the steps but again “Follow the steps at your own risk”
In this tutorial, I will show you how to update Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This leaked firmware has almost a file size of 1.15 GB and is compatible with both the 16GB and 32GB variants of Note 3 SM-N9005, but the 32GB variant needs to be re-partitioned as per the new update.
Let’s Install Official Android 5 Lollipop on Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005
WARNING AGAIN: This guide is intended for Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005. Do NOT try it on other variants. Doing so will brick your device. Follow the instruction at your own risk. I will not be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components. It is recommended for technically talented users only.
a) Note 3 should require at least 70 to 80% battery charge
b) Enable USB Debugging (Settings-> Developer Options -> USB Debugging)
c) Install required USB drivers for Note 3 on your Win PC (if you have KIES 3 installed then you already have them)
d) Backup any data as you will lose all data with this method of flashing
e) Download Lollipop Firmware (N9005XXUGBNL8 5.0.7z) from here
f) Download Odin 3.09 but you can use Odin 3.07 too. Download Odin 3.09 from here
1. Extract the downloaded firmware zip file and Odin zip file on your PC. Upon unzipping contents would be something like the snaps given below
2. Run Odin v3.09.exe file
3. For 16 GB variants of the Note 3, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and everything else is unchecked in the Odin. Then select firmware files in their respective fields (see screenshot)
4. For 32 GB version of Note 3, follow the below steps carefully.
– Backup the PIT file of the device before flashing the firmware just in case something goes wrong. For this, open Command Prompt and execute the following adb commands one by one: (I skipped this part)
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/My-N9005.pit bs=1 skip=17408 count=4244"
adb pull /sdcard/My-N9005.pit
– Make sure Auto Reboot, Re-Partition and F. Reset Time are checked and everything else is unchecked in the Odin.
– Now, select the PIT file in the PIT field to re-partition your device. Then select firmware files in their respective fields (see screenshot)
5. Now, boot your Note 3 into download mode. To do so, switch off your phone and press Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until you see the warning screen, use the power button to confirm and enter Download Mode.
6. Connect Note 3 to the PC using an USB cable.
7. Odin should recognize the device and will show the COM Port in the Odin screen with Added message.
8. Click on “Start” to the flashing process begin. It will take a few minutes to complete. Once completed, Odin will display a PASS!! message.
TADA !!! Your Galaxy Note 3 will reboot automatically after the flashing process is finished. That’s it. It will take little long time to boot for the first time. Don’t panic and enjoy the reincarnated interface! (Source – XDA)
Enjoy your Note 3 LTE N9005 with Lollipop, but you will lose the root access if it had one.
Here are some snapshots of the device shows the new interface along with status of the device as official
And for those who think that lock screen has a lollipop visible all the time then they have a sweet surprise ahead as it is not the case and lock screen looks wonderful even while downloading stuff as shown below
It wasn’t a long time ago when I was being introduced to facebook. For me it was just another portal of social media as I was already on orkut; yes long forgotten orkut. I have seen and in fact experienced the evolution of social online interaction through eras of IRC chat clients, messengers, which were the popular choices back in 90s to early 2000s. The person who introduced me to facebook during my masters in 2008 was not a big fan of orkut or perhaps he was a visionary, who could read the consistent failure of google when it came to social media platforms.
I am not sure about everyone but majority of us who had the privilege and Pentium power in same time span (i.e. late 90s to early 2000s) were almost running a parallel life. They had unfamiliar online friends and also the known ones from whereabouts of real life which of course had its own pros and cons. One of the biggest charms of facebook was that one could find the old acquaintances and long lost friends. And believe me finding the old mates from childhood/school was an experience similar to finding a lost treasure. It was indeed rejoicing.
I won’t write about the negatives that had been the part of social media but would focus on a different aspect of negativity amongst us here in this very blog. Social networking became stronger with time aided by smart phone revolution; whatsapp, tango, skype; you name it and you can have it with as many features as you can dream of and as many emoticons as you can have the moods by themselves. To be honest, interacting online at times is more pleasant than the in-person meetings as some people are more gifted with their expressions when it comes to writing. But the sad truth is that people can also hurt you, much bitterly with their written arsenal than they actually can in their real lives. Written variants of speech can also be very confusing, you take a smiley out of the message and it changes the entire intent of the message, same is the case with putting it at the end of the rude message.
We are humans and we do perceive events and ideas differently. Everyone has a different take on different events. Difference of opinion, if leading to better ideas, is indeed good but unfortunately it has been bringing out the evil inside us; the bitterness, and the acrimony that has been soaked in for quite long through several phases of life. There always had been a debate about how good it is not to impose your ideas on others and respect other’s point of view but Facebook comments however are a dangerous threat to that. Even the most moderate and patient individuals can lose it and start getting tenacious over their stand, for what they are saying is nothing but utterly correct.
We socialize and make ‘de facto’ groups based on motives even if they are not intentional. Some of you might disagree but one definitely needs a common interest for friendships/relationships to prevail and flourish unless you are arranged married to one. Gamers would understand this more than anyone as they do make friends in huge quantities playing a common on-liner like Mafia Wars or Criminal Case etc. What I heard long ago and recently experienced is that mutual interest is even surpassed by mutual hatred. Common enemy surely can bring you more closer than having a common friend/interest.
Most of this year has been wasted in political non sense and sit-ins. At one hand we have a flag bearer of change who is against the systems being in the system while outside the system for the system to continue by changing the system and replacing the system through renewal of system etc. Yes, he is as confused and twisted as my statement here. On the other hand we a have a businessman prime minister who has a reputation of building mega projects so that he can bribe the people with their own money and continue to increase his family wealth through nepotism.
Regardless of who likes whom and what political awareness it has blessed us with, my point is at what cost and in what way on social media it has affected us? To me politics has turned into a game of likes and dislikes more completely than ever before. Political rivalries are as severe as religious contentions and difference of opinion is synonymous to personal animosities therefore should be avoided as much as possible in public. Some of you would again disagree here that debate for difference of opinion is a good way to handle matters but social media and social interaction can worsen it or one should say that social relationships/friendships can easily be ruined (and are ruined) these days over the very same social platforms.
In my perspective, Facebook and social media was supposed to make me happy as I was spending my personal time for my leisure, entertainment or awareness. Why should it turn into a battle ground just because someone out there has a fragile ego or poor temperament and he happens to disagree with my perspective? You will find a wide variety of people who consider their utmost responsibility to comment on everything as if they are auditor general of facebook and they have nothing to do except to ensure everything is going as per their way of thinking and they have the sole responsibility to enlighten people with their self-proclaimed intellect. I am also guilty of sharing content which may hurt many, so it is not totally the fault of others to come and comment on that post. But wait! Where is that chant of respect the difference of opinion?
Platforms like facebook combine several type of social contacts like family, school fellows, college mates, university buddies, work colleagues, friends, relatives and acquaintances. So they mostly watch the same content shared by you. The comment of one of them may offend you on platform (just like in public) which may appear unharmful in person. These differences may lead to a point where good friendships may turn into bad rivalries.
A fight over facebook which may be a free entertainment to many of viewers can really dry you out of your positive energy. Most of us may have gone through this torture for once at least that we had an argument (treated like a war no matter what you claim it to be or how peaceful you try to pretend) and had to cancel their important work/assignments just to carry out on that fight. Initially I thought unfollowing that (different opinionated) friend was good enough but some people don’t stop. Despite of their ethical claims they don’t even know when to draw the line and when to stop. They almost cross every limit of indecency and misbehave. Calling people with fragile egos or fat egos and declaring them biased just because they don’t like the way you think are common traits of modern times. To make matters worse they even start tagging you in posts which you literally hate.
As a conclusion I saw some people unfriending me and I lost many acquaintances and even with regret of losing them life certainly became better. And I admit that I have unfriended many and I don’t think it’s a bad cost to pay for regaining the peace of your mind. This is your time, you spend it on facebook or any other social media platforms. You are spending your precious time for joy, not to make it a blood boiling experience and causing contentions in friendships. When facebook wasn’t there, what did we use to do? Meeting an old acquaintance or friend somewhere out was always a pleasant surprise. I believe that when you unfriend the ones who don’t know when to stop or when to draw the line; it gets better. It is indeed a better choice to have a probability of meeting them somewhere out of the blue in a decent way than to keep them on facebook and keep accumulating the grudge. It’s your time so cherish it with joy, you dislike something, unfollow it and if they mess with you by tagging or poking nose in every post, just eliminate them from facebook lineup with no hard feelings.
Blaming the tools like facebook is not the way; just like you can’t blame life for the choices you made. Life gives a chance to everyone at least once in your lives so make maximum out of it. Stay happy and spread happiness 🙂
By the time I may have published this piece of work, things may have unfolded to you. Yes! I am talking about the on-going drama/concert/dharna in Islamabad’s arena of Red Zone. Procrastination is one word which we can all relate to in some possible way. As a lazy person I love to delay things as much as I can but government took it to a next level, is quite an understatement but wait; it was never in the hands of government in the first place.
I am not sure if we have learnt our lessons or not. But I have learnt some positives for sure. Deadline after deadline after deadline is one of the most teasing and torturous punishment one can suffer from. Like many other pseudo intellects who un-wantedly have turned into political commentators would have said upon these deadlines that “I would never do that! Again 24 hours? Again 48 hours?” But guys one thing is for sure, that we all have realized that promises are meant to be kept if you are human, and meant to be broken if you are a politician. So next time your wife asks you to take her to her parents, it is your call that you want to be a human or a politician.
People are bored; anchors, journalists and media person have been heavily abused. So again mentioning what actually had happened in last couple of weeks would again bring out the monster amongst many of the readers as it may go against their views and I may be accused of blasphemy for saying ill words for their political Gods.
There are many idiots like me who wonder that why Ibless didn’t prostrated before Adam and why can’t Imran Khan (IK) and Nawaz Sharif (NS) could shake hands and jointly serve the nation. To me it always meant that one is a better legislator (before he started his container walk in heat of August) and other is a better developer of mega projects and has a reputation of reviving economy. But alas! These thoughts are more improbable than finding a mermaid in Rawal Lake. Many people found their mermaids at IK’s dharna 🙂
For many people it was a CHANGE, they were looking for. IK proved to be the hope for them. He motivated the uninterested youth and invited them in politics. That brought out a very positive change in itself. Turn out for elections was good if not extraordinary. With a mandate a government was formed. A system started to perform slowly and gradually. Economy started to build up. Stock market revived. Karachi target killing stopped. Drone attacks were ceased. Weekly blasts on SUI pipeline near bugti tribe vanished. Mega projects started across the country. Power Plants inaugurated and foundation stone of over dozen was set. That’s the change which this country deserved but it was coming slow and gradual. And then again that happened what had been the fate of this country. To be played in the hands of establishment.
Tahir ul Qadri (TUQ), Imran Khan both announced their respective rallies and marched down to the beautiful Islamabad to turn it into filth in the name of their right to protest. They somehow forgot about the rights of residents of Islamabad to live in peaceful conditions. Their language and demands were mixed in a strange and confused way. There was one thing everyone in favor of. Firstly the proper and unbiased investigation of Model Town incident in which over a dozen casualties occurred and secondly that electoral reforms should be made and if some discrepancies are found then culprits should be prosecuted and such events should not occur in future. Demands were justified but then there was a stubborn child who wanted PM to resign before any investigation or before any of these demands could be met. To me this demand was pathetic as IK seemed to be the biggest hurdle in the way of his own demands.
I generally try to put myself in others shoes to feel what it actually means and estimate the experience they are going through. As a teacher, if someone alleges that I am biased and I have done injustice in marking the papers, what would my response be? I would show him the paper. If I have submitted the papers in exam cell then I can take him to exam cell and ask them to show him his papers. Demands seem to be fine upto this point. But what if the student asks me to resign, calls entire exam cell culprit and demands VC of university to step down and only then agrees to get his paper re checked; it would be a complete analogy to what has been going on.
Let me change the course, there is a friend of mine who happens to be quite resourceful in news and one week ago he told me that NS won’t worth more than Deputy Commissioner and IK will meet his political death for quite a while if not on permanent basis. I was surprised but now at this time between 28th and 29th of August we have heard that both clowns have announced that army has decided to act as a guarantor and require 24 more hours. All I could say was R.I.P democracy.
N league members could be making merry that their PM is not stepping down. They might be the flag bearers of the fascination that they survived marshal law and democracy has prevailed. On the other hand IK can claim that he made government begging on their knees and slapped them around and are victorious but for any sane brain I would ask them to take a moment and think what has actually happened and who is the real beneficiary?
This government came with both a personal grudge as well as a plan that they will make Musharraf an example for others and will ensure that army never intervenes the democratic process ever in future. Mr prime minister! one smooth transition of democratic governments does not mean that they have matured enough to take on the ruthless bull of establishment. Army had been criticized and called boots for decades for intervention and throwing away democracy in huge chasms. No matter which party you belong to or how impartial you are; you cannot deny the following facts which are
1) All pending bills of army had been cleared (round 150 million)
2) Army is respected for not intervening
3) Army is praised for being impartial and unbiased (especially didn’t take government’s side)
4) Army is not hungry for power
5) Everyone trusts army
6) Army avoided massive casualties by not using force
7) Army despite being busy in zarb-e-azb operation still managed national security issues
8) Politicians are not capable of handling their own issues
9) Government is on its knees and will always be looking at army if they are smiling or upset with them
10) Only army was taking care of IDPs while power politics was going on
11) No one will question waziristan operation ever again
From financial benefits to wonder face of the nation, they had it all. IK due to desperation and NS due to arrogance and nepotism gave it away. I will blame IK more than NS because he was used as a tool. A man of many capabilities who raised hopes and was a good competition disappointed many. He created the balance in dynamics of political system of country and he gave it away. NS was already doing many silly blunders in his legislative policies which could have dethroned him. But IK’s desperation to become PM made him nothing more than a tool. Worst part is that he and his followers still don’t realize this fact. I think instead of this drama, all three forces chiefs should be given permanent resident-ship in parliament with complete authority to make a dummy PM from anywhere.
One should not be surprised that model town incident was all part of plan and establishment killed innocents/rebels for their cause. The case won’t be resolved soon and a threat will always be upon sitting PM and CM as it would be another string in the hands of establishment.
Army has it all, I must say the great management of establishment, they had it previously too but they have it all now. PM and CM will stay and won’t step down as weak PM and CM are what establishment created and they won’t let them go away. Democracy has died today again. Our politicians gave it away. Their fault is that one was stubbornly stupid and other was a dangerous moron used as a tool, and they never thought of bigger picture and never attempted to outsmart establishment for atleast once for a change. Establishment will keep creating leaders and consuming them with time if and when needed.
May my fears be proven wrong but by tomorrow you will see that PM wont step down and the concerts would be over soon. And revolutionists would be back to schools, colleges, universities and offices again in their McDonalds life which they perceive with their DSLRs but welcome to an official behind the scene marshal law.
A wonderful piece written at the hour of need.
I have not been following the unfolding 14th August “Azadi March” drama closely at all. I’ve largely confined myself to reading headlines at the Dawn website and the occasional op-ed from the Express Tribune that would not result in a nose-bleed or worse an aneurysm (or even both at the same time which would be a most undignified way to go). The entire thing is painfully boring; Imran Khan wants to be PM. The current government is overreacting to his jejune behavior. And Imran Khan still wants to be PM because a person of his station cannot be saddled with running a piddly province that isn’t named Punjab.
Nonetheless, there are some things that have still jumped out at me regarding this entire episode. Let’s just build a timeline for this shall we?
We hold elections on the 11th of May 2013, which result in a victory for…

“The world cup fever is on” is quite an understatement. I am writing this blog a few minutes after I have seen Brazilians turned to ashes by the German brilliance. Yes it was 7-1, the most humiliating defeat Brazil has ever faced in its homeland. I don’t know what is more bizarre, my act of checking the weather if it is sunny or not through my cell phone instead of window right next to me or the score sheet of Brazilian team. Argentina vs Holland is yet to be played which will decide the next team to face wrath of Germans. Here are some interesting statistical facts about the football world cup finals.
Interestingly there are only two teams which have appeared most number of times in the finals of any football world cup. Yes, they are Germany and Brazil. Both teams have appeared 7 times in world cup final. This victory indeed has not only thrown away Brazil out of the world cup but it also makes Germany to play the final most number of times in football history. Germans will play their 8th final at Rio de Janeiro. Brazil is yet to play another match which would be 63rd match of the tournament but it would be for the third position. Despite of number of appearances Brazil still has most number of title reign than any other nation in the world with maximum number of 5 title victories. Brazil has won 5 out of 7 world cup finals while Germany has won 3 out of 7 of its final games.
Let me take you through Brazilian victories. Interestingly it was fourth world cup in 1950 when Brazil reached the final for the first time and guess what it lost to Uruguay 2-1. Next world cup of 1954 was not for Brazil either in fact it was for Germans. But right next to it, 1958 and 1962 were the years of good news for football passionate nation where they could finally celebrate their back to back world cup victories. Brazil won its first ever world cup in 1958 against Sweden 5-2 and that was the only Swedish appearance in world cup ever. In 1962 Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 to win their second title and also became the second nation to win world cup twice as Italy has already won the world cup twice back in 1934 and 1938. Fourth appearance was in 1970 where Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 and became the only nation to win the title 3 times. In 1994, Brazil faced Italy once again and it was an amazing tight game with both teams 0-0 at full time and I still remember that Roberto Baggio’s penalty hit missed the target and Brazil won it on penalty shoot outs. In 1998 Brazil reached the final once again but France ruined their hopes and defeated them 3-0. but it was 2002 when Brazil played their 3rd back to back world cup final against Germany and defeated them 2-0. One can pretty much say the Germans settled the score in today’s match and that too with interest. Of course Brazil won’t be playing 2014 final.
Let’s talk about Germany now. It was West Germany which qualified for the world cup final for the first time in 1954 and defeated Hungary 3-2 in tight contest at Swiss ground in Bern. In 1966, Germans faced England and it was not much pleasant experience for them as they lost it 4-2 but it was a match won in extra time. In 1974, Germans defeated Netherlands 2-1 at their home ground. Germany made it back to back in two world cup finals in 1982 and 1986 but both were heart breaking experiences for them. Germans lost to Italy in 1982 3-1 and lost to Argentina 3-2 in 1986. In 1990 Germany consolidated their loss of 1986 and defeated Argentina 1-0. In 2002 German dreams were shattered by Ronaldo where they lost to Brazilians 2-0.
There are a few things which we can learn about Germans for sure. Indeed they are genuinely aggressive both as a nation and as a sports team. They always have a plan and play at a very fast pace. And one thing is for sure, as one can feel from the stats that they are really good at settling the debts. If they have ever lost to a nation, they have made them repay. They have a much better record against Netherlands than against Argentina, and they have already seen that the team relying on single players are much fun to beat. They have proven this very fact in game against Portugal where Christiano Ronaldo was a mere spectator as Germans humbled them 4-0. They also proved it in Neymar deficient game today (which was more of a strategy deficient team).
On the other hand, Argentina has won the world cup twice and lost the final twice too. Argentina and Uruguay were the two teams to play in first ever final in 1930 where Argentina lost to Uruguay 4-2 (No! there were no Suarez bite threats at that time). It was 1978 when Argentina played the final again after 48 years and guess what they faced Netherlands and defeated them 3-1 in extra time. It gets really interesting here as in 1986 and 1990 finals were played between Germany and Argentina. Argentina won the final of 1986 3-2 but lost in 1990 with 1-0. Which of these history is going to repeat itself? So over all Argentina appeared 4 times in the world cup finals and enjoyed two of them.
Holland, has a horrible record in world cup finals. They have worked hard to reach there thrice but lost all the three contests. In 1974 they lost their first ever final to Germany 2-1. They persisted with hard work, appeared in next world cup in 1978 again but lost it to Argentina 3-1. (Yup, a very bad news for Dutch as they may have to face one or both teams again). It was Soccer city in Johannesburg in South Africa in 2010 where they lost it to the current world champions Spain 1-0. Good news is that they are the only reason who dented Spain so badly with flurry of goals and threw them out of the world cup with at least one debt settled.
The stats are interesting, mostly in favor of Germans as they are the only team to play 8 world cup finals and most number of world cup final victories amongst the three teams left in the tournament. They have lost to Argentina but they have beaten them back again in history. Argentina’s Messi is a huge factor but Germans have shown that they play with something called THE PLAN, something which Brazilians, Portuguese and Spanish know nothing about. Netherlands apparently are the underdogs here as they have the tendency of playing and losing finals. They have lost one final each to Germans and Argentinians but can they break the curse? Interesting indeed it is for a statistician. Brazil most probably will lose their game again which the have to play for 3rd place. Lets see what happens. Its all getting interesting. Keep watching and keep enjoying 🙂
