Update Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 (LTE) to Android 5.0 Lollipop

Happy new year everyone and we all have new year resolutions, promises, and goals to achieve. But wouldn’t it be great to start your new year by upgrading your Galaxy Note 3 LTE from Android 4.4 KitKat to Lollipop 5.0 (of course if you have one). Pakistani consumer market is now well into the race for 4G services especially with Warid into the game promising to provide tough competition to previously the lone survivor Zong. For people who are using Note 3 LTE version i.e. N-9005 variant, they are well aware of the fact that the said device doesn’t show GSM/WCDMA/LTE option in MOBILE NETWORKS option and you may have rooted your device like I did and probably have knocked KNOX warranty counter. There are several methods and links available for this option and best of them is to root your device and change an persist.lteon entry in your root access file to TRUE. But if you haven’t tripped the KNOX counter and want to upgrade to lollipop with the leaked but official version of Android 5.0 here is the way.

Disclaimer: If you haven’t used ODIN before or afraid that you might brick your device then please stop at this point and better wait for the official release which perhaps would appear in February 2015, but if you are enthusiastic about improved TouchViz and snappy 5.0 version of android here are the steps but again “Follow the steps at your own risk”

In this tutorial, I will show you how to update Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This leaked firmware has almost a file size of 1.15 GB and is compatible with both the 16GB and 32GB variants of Note 3 SM-N9005, but the 32GB variant needs to be re-partitioned as per the new update.

Before you get start flashing the firmware, note that this Lollipop update improves Note 3 in many ways. Besides the revamped Touchwiz interface that matches the Lollipop’s Material Design language, the new ART runtime brings an improved performance than the old Dalvik runtime. Also, the battery life is expected to be improved much even though I personally have reservations on it as dark backgrounds are replaced with bright white ones and this may take away tha advantage of AMOLEDs but I can confirm it after a couple of week’s use.

Let’s Install Official Android 5 Lollipop on Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005

WARNING AGAIN: This guide is intended for Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005. Do NOT try it on other variants. Doing so will brick your device. Follow the instruction at your own risk. I will not be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components. It is recommended for technically talented users only.

a) Note 3 should require at least 70 to 80% battery charge
b) Enable USB Debugging (Settings-> Developer Options -> USB Debugging)
c) Install required USB drivers for Note 3 on your Win PC (if you have KIES 3 installed then you already have them)
d) Backup any data as you will lose all data with this method of flashing
e) Download Lollipop Firmware (N9005XXUGBNL8 5.0.7z) from here
f) Download Odin 3.09 but you can use Odin 3.07 too. Download Odin 3.09 from here

Installation Instruction

1. Extract the downloaded firmware zip file and Odin zip file on your PC. Upon unzipping contents would be something like the snaps given below

2. Run Odin v3.09.exe file
3. For 16 GB variants of the Note 3, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and everything else is unchecked in the Odin. Then select firmware files in their respective fields (see screenshot)

4. For 32 GB version of Note 3, follow the below steps carefully.
– Backup the PIT file of the device before flashing the firmware just in case something goes wrong. For this, open Command Prompt and execute the following adb commands one by one: (I skipped this part)

adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/My-N9005.pit bs=1 skip=17408 count=4244"
adb pull /sdcard/My-N9005.pit

– Make sure Auto Reboot, Re-Partition and F. Reset Time are checked and everything else is unchecked in the Odin.

– Now, select the PIT file in the PIT field to re-partition your device. Then select firmware files in their respective fields (see screenshot)

5. Now, boot your Note 3 into download mode. To do so, switch off your phone and press Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until you see the warning screen, use the power button to confirm and enter Download Mode.
6. Connect Note 3 to the PC using an USB cable.
7. Odin should recognize the device and will show the COM Port in the Odin screen with Added message.
8. Click on “Start” to the flashing process begin. It will take a few minutes to complete. Once completed, Odin will display a PASS!! message.

TADA !!! Your Galaxy Note 3 will reboot automatically after the flashing process is finished. That’s it. It will take little long time to boot for the first time. Don’t panic and enjoy the reincarnated interface! (Source – XDA)

Enjoy your Note 3 LTE N9005 with Lollipop, but you will lose the root access if it had one.

Here are some snapshots of the device shows the new interface along with status of the device as official
